joan Makes Peace With Moving On in “don’t wanna be your friend”

There is a poem whose opening line reads, “People come into your life for a reason, a season, or a lifetime.” Penetrating pop duo joan delivers a highly infectious single with “don’t wanna be your friend,” an upbeat tune about knowing when it is time to move on from someone.

As much as you deeply care for someone and as close as you once were, sometimes it is just not meant to be. With luminous synths and mesmerizing melodies ascending into an eruptive chorus, this irresistible offering is an ideal anthem to remind us it is okay to let go. Whether it is moving on from an ex or saying sayonara to that toxic friend "don't wanna be for your friend" is a welcome moment of catharsis.

"don't wanna be for your friend" also arrives alongside a quirky video that showcases the pair’s humorous nature with an epic alien invasion. Directed by Sawyer Skipper, the visuals can be interpreted as a representation of how some relationships can become foreign to us.
