Fall Under the Spell of Eyedress and Mac Demarco's "The Dark Prince"

Bedroom-pop artist Eyedress has been joined by indie icon Mac DeMarco for his new single, “The Dark Prince.” The song is a true fusion of styles, intertwining the classic nostalgia of DeMarco’s shoegaze sound with Eyedress’ catchy songwriting.

"The Dark Prince" opens with a playful sample of a booming, theme-park-announcer introducing listeners to the sultry landscape of breezy riffs and glittering chords. Every wandering vocal melody is doubled by a guitar, almost using the fuzz-laden vocal like another layer in the arrangement. Light percussion keeps “The Dark Prince” spinning forward, but lets it stay in the zen of its easy-listening daze.

Although the two artists have crossover within the sonic palettes of their individual discographies, listeners will be able to pick out the glimmers of each writer on the track. “The Dark Prince” is built around a foundational guitar riff that dances along a surf rock melody, melting perfectly in with Eyedress’ signature sound. It’s decorated with lush chords that sweep and swell across the soundscape in familiar DeMarco fashion. You can even hear the touches of DeMarco’s signature vocal processing on Eyedress’ voice, coloring his usual retro tone with a layer of neon fuzz and reverb.

An accompanying music video showcases the two artists in a home video-style montage throughout a medieval castle. They pluck out the chords to “The Dark Prince” between staged sword fights while wearing lizard masks and churning spells in a cauldron. The video captures the playful nature of Mac DeMarco and Eyedress’ collaboration—just two good friends making good music together.

"The Dark Prince" is the first of two Eyedress singles to feature DeMarco, with the other set to release this fall.
